MALACCA: The vocalist of rock band Spring, Wan Aminuddin Wan Ismail, better known as Ameng, was sentenced to eight years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here Tuesday for drug possession and abuse.
Judge Abu Bakar Katar handed down the sentence after Ameng, 42, pleaded guilty to all three charges against him.
On the first and second amended charges, Ameng was jointly charged with his wife, Sabariah Zakaria, 41.
Sabariah, who pleaded not guilty, was released after the prosecution withdrew the charges against her.
Ameng was sentenced to eight years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for the first amended charge of possessing 105.90gm of cannabis in a hotel room at Jalan Melaka Raya 3, Taman Melaka Raya, Bandar Hilir here about 5.20pm on Feb 1, 2011.
He was sentenced to two years' jail for the second amended charge with possession of 0.22gm methamphetamine, at the same time, place and date.
To another charge with self-administration of methamphetamine into his body at 6pm last Feb 1 at the Melaka Tengah police station here, Amen was sentenced to a year's jail and placed under police supervision for two years.
However, Abu Bakar ordered Ameng to serve the sentence concurrently from the date of his arrest last Feb 1.
Earlier in mitigation, Ameng, who was represented by lawyer Azrul Zulkifli Stork, said he regretted his doings and promised not to repeat his mistake.
Deputy public prosecutor Iffa Sirrhu Samsudin prosecuted.
